A king doesn’t seem so bad when you think he’s on your side. A king has your allegiance when he’s angry at the same people you’re angry at, and is prejudiced against the same people you’re prejudiced against. A king doesn’t seem so wrong when he gives you hope that someday you too might become king. Trump validates the fool, and gives weapons to the hateful. “Go, and burn!” he says, and people do it because they are blind to the fact that they are burning their own homes. Or maybe they don’t care anymore because anger feels more powerful in the moment than wisdom.
